Successful students and teachers at Comenius University have been awarded
Bratislava, 21 November 2016: In honour of International Students’ Day, Comenius University Rector, Professor Karol Mičieta, presented Academic Mentions to 31 successful students. He also presented 30 teachers with letters of thanks at the ceremony, which was held in the Comenius University Auditorium.
The aim of this event is to award students for excellent study results, exceptional knowledge, abilities, and talent.
“On 17 November we celebrated a holiday for students all over the world, which for us in a historical context is marked by two events carrying a message of freedom and democracy which has not lost its significance over time. In 1939 universities were the target of harsh and destructive measures from the Nazi regime. And in 1989 students also stood up against oppression. I am convinced that it is necessary to once again recognize their courage and express to them our gratitude and admiration,” said Professor Mičieta. “The freedom and democracy gained through the Velvet Revolution are not automatic and guaranteed values. It is up to us to protect and develop them. Having time to think about the form of our existence, the model of our common society, and the content of our common values is as essential as it ever was. Universities contribute to the global wealth of knowledge and are a significant social bearer of the message of humanism and deep moral and ethical values,” the rector said.
Academic mentions were received by 31 students, including medical student Tomáš Havran, who was involved in the establishment of 3D printing and bioprinting at the Faculty of Medicine and who was also a member of a Slovak medical team who helped refugees at a camp in Slovenia; Alexandra Longová, a student at the Faculty of Natural Sciences who represented Slovakia in archery at the Olympic Games in Rio; Brigita Hlačinová, a student at the Faculty of Education who is a recognized interpreter of sign language and a member of a number of organizations and associations working with people with hearing difficulties; Patrik Bilanin, a student at the Faculty of Pharmacy who is the President of the Slovak Pharmaceutical Students’ Association; and Matej Badin from the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics and the organizer of promotional events and mathematics and physics competitions for primary and secondary school students.
Letters of thanks from the rector were received by 30 teachers who have played a significant role in the many scientific, artistic, and professional successes of their students and who have spread the good name of their faculty and the university both domestically and abroad.
