ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR MICHAL MEGO FROM COMENIUS UNIVERSITY’S FACULTY OF MEDICINE RECEIVES A CRYSTAL WING AWARD FOR MEDICINE

On Sunday 29 January 2017 the Krištáľové krídlo (Crystal Wing) awards ceremony for 2016 took place at the Slovak National Theatre. Twelve Slovak personalities in the fields of science, medicine, business, art, and sport received this prestigious award. Among those honoured at the twentieth annual ceremony was the prominent Slovak oncologist, Associate Professor Michal Mego from the Faculty of Medicine at Comenius University.

Associate Professor Mego received the Crystal Wing for services to medicine. He is the head of the faculty’s and the National Oncological Institute’s Translational Research Unit based in Bratislava. In 2016 he published seventeen research articles which further the knowledge of circulatory tumour cells, which are a part of the process of metastasis and are important as indicators of prognosis and as answers to treatment options for cancer patients.

Graduates of Comenius University were among others who were honoured at the ceremony, and included the Olympic gold-medal winners and cousins Ladislav Škantár and Peter Škantár, who were both awarded for their services to sport. The category of journalism and literature was won by the poet, prose writer, dramatist, scriptwriter, lyricist, and author of children’s and youth literature, Daniel Hevier, who is a graduate of Comenius University’s Faculty of Arts.

The Slovak violinist Dalibor Karvay was awarded for services to music. Special awards, which were decided upon by the Crystal Wing’s Grand Jury, were presented to the composer and pianist Marián Varga and the car brand manager, sportsman, diplomat, and philanthropist Andrej Glatz.

The Crystal Wing is awarded every year to Slovak personalities who have achieved exceptional levels of success in their fields. The award is presented in various fields of social, cultural, economic, and public life. It aims to identify and recognize exceptional people and their professional achievements which are deserving of the greatest respect. The Crystal Wing has been awarded since 1997, and since that time it has become a respected honour which reflects the great expertise of its prize-winners.
